Shiatsu FAQ's
What happens in a Shiatsu Session?
Sessions take place in a warm, safe space where you remain fully clothed lying on a futon on the floor or a couch covered with a warm blanket. Your first session begins with taking a full medical case history. This includes any specific problems you have, and a discussion of your work, family, eating and exercise patterns. This is followed by the Shiatsu treatment which usually lasts about 50 minutes. After the session there is time to let the effects begin to settle in and to talk about the treatment.
What does it feel like?
The touch, or pressure used is usually pleasurable, comforting and relaxing. Sometimes it is necessary to work more deeply, but I ask my clients to stay in contact with me to let me know how they are feeling.
Are there any times when Shiatsu should be avoided?
Shiatsu is a very safe therapy, but it should be avoided if you:
- have an infectious disease
- are suffering from any acute, feverish illness
- have internal bleeding or blood clots
- have had a major operation during the last 3 months
How many sessions will I need?
Many people have regular monthly Shiatsu to maintain their health. However, if you have a specific problem you want help with, I will usually suggest that you come for a number of sessions before we review your progress. The frequency and amount of sessions needed will vary in each case, and I will discuss this with you on your first session and recommend a treatment plan.
What should I wear?
You remain fully clothed so wearing loose fitting, comfortable clothing, preferably with long sleeves such as a sweat-shirt, leggings or joggers is good. This allows room for any stretches during the session. Please avoid wearing tight fitting clothing.
How will I feel after a treatment?
Some clients fall asleep during their session as they find it leaves them feeling deeply relaxed and calm. It can also leave you feeling intensely alive and energised. Sometimes long suppressed feelings or emotions can surface, either during or after a treatment and this is perfectly normal. Give yourself the time and space to allow the emotions to come up and release rather than suppressing them will help the body heal and recover more quickly. After Shiatsu your body will be moving into a new state of equilibrium and rebalance. I usually recommend drinking some water after your session.
What if I am on medication?
Shiatsu will not interfere with your medication. It will often complement conventional medical treatment by giving an overall strengthening effect and improving the circulation of blood and lymph and reducing stress. If you are receiving medical treatment for a condition, then it may be advisable to inform or consult your doctor prior to having a Shiatsu treatment.
Can I receive Shiatsu when I am pregnant?
Yes, Shiatsu is amazing to receive when you are pregnant. It can help release many symptoms we experience through pregnancy. See my page on pregnancy massage for further details.
I cannot lie on the floor. Can I still have Shiatsu?
Yes. It is possible to receive Shiatsu in a chair or lying on a treatment couch.
Will I have to change my lifestyle?
In order to improve your health and wellbeing it may be a case of changing some lifestyle habits which may be contributing to your health issue as well. I can advise and make some recommendations on how to manage stress, improve your diet and exercise for example which will also help improve your overall health and wellbeing.
