Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is now Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS)
|
Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS), previously known as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), is a lifelong endocrine and metabolic disorder driven by insulin resistance and excess androgens. It affects reproductive, metabolic and mental health, causing symptoms such as irregular periods, acne, excess hair growth, and infertility, while increasing the risk of diabetes and hypertension.
"Recognising PMOS as a ‘polyendocrine’ condition acknowledges that infertility is driven by multiple interacting hormonal disturbances, including insulin and neuroendocrine hormones, rather than just an isolated ovarian disorder, This opens doors for treatments that target the underlying metabolic causes, such as managing insulin resistance, to restore spontaneous ovulation and improve pregnancy outcomes, which are often hindered by the interplay of these complex endocrine abnormalities." Quote from Mickey Coffler, MD, OB-GYN and fertility specialist What is Insulin Resistance? Insulin resistance which is linked to diabetes can cause PCOS. The video below from Dr. Nadia Pateguana and Dr. Jason Fung talks about Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and the causes which have proven to be diet related. |
